Doing really good stuff.

Plymouth UCC’s Local Mission Work and Social Justice Advocacy

Plymouth UCC’s mission work and social justice advocacy isn’t limited to faraway locations. It builds community and relationships right where it is - creating a space where all are welcome. Locally, Plymouth provides monetary support for Pilgrim Manor, United Church Outreach Ministry, Partners for a Racism-Free Community, Habitat for Humanity, the Domestic Crisis Center, Family Promise/IHN, Grand Rapids Urban League, Gays in Faith Together (GIFT), and Grand Rapids’ Festival of the Arts, among others.

Plymouth also supports these organizations through volunteers, programming, and promotion. As an example, since 1997, the church has hosted homeless families through Family Promise, one week each quarter (sometimes more often) and several Plymouth members sit on the boards of organizations Plymouth supports.

Building use

Plymouth’s building is used by a number of neighborhood and community groups including two Alcoholics Anonymous groups, Grand Rapids Chapter of Amnesty International, Overeaters Anonymous, and a Vietnam Veterans support group. The building also hosts programs sponsored by other non-profit organizations and churches, including concerts, fundraisers, and educational presentations with topics that range from current world events to the environment and spirituality.

Chin Baptist Church

A group of Burmese refugees, primarily Chin people, meeting as the Chin Baptist Church, conduct services in the building every Sunday afternoon from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Services are conducted in their native language under their own leadership. This relationship provides for fellowship and cultural exchange opportunities between Plymouth and the Chin Baptist Church.

Birchgrove Apartments

Plymouth provided the land and the impetus for the building of this small apartment complex, located behind the church building, for people living with chronic and persistent mental illness. The church continues to provide programs and fellowship opportunities with the residents of Birchgrove.
