Plymouth UCC’s International Mission Work and Social Justice Advocacy
"It seems to me that the church, whenever it's faithful, always lives at the intersection of Liberty and Love.” - Reverend Doug Van Doren
Much of Plymouth United Church of Christ’s international involvement is through support for denominational ministries such as One Great Hour of Sharing (OGHS) and Global Ministries. Still, there are ways in which Plymouth members can contribute more than financially.
One Great Hour of Sharing
The United Church of Christ (UCC) annually channels more than $3 million dollars through OGHS to humanitarian needs in the world. OGHS supports self-help programs in more than 80 nations to build sustainable communities that enable people and communities to stand against and rise above hunger, disease, illiteracy, and other forces of injustice that deny and destroy dignity. It provides emergency and long-term assistance to people in the aftermath of natural and man-made disasters, and it offers advocacy and help for people who have been uprooted from their home of origin. The UCC unites with Christians in eight other Protestant denominations and Church World Service in OGHS, thus multiplying the effectiveness and extent of our witness many times over.
A joint board of the UCC and the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Global Ministries is responsible for nurturing relationships with international partners on behalf of Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and the UCC. Global Ministries has over 270 partner churches and organizations in about 70 countries around the world. Plymouth’s Justice and Peace Task Force is working through Global Ministries to establish a partnership between Plymouth UCC and a Palestinian Christian church.
Justice and Witness
Convinced that God’s vision of “another world is possible,” the UCC’s Justice and Witness Ministries helps local congregations and all settings of the church respond to God's commandments to do justice, seek peace, and effect change for a better world. Plymouth members and friends are encouraged to take actions on issues that are essential to creating the world we believe God intends.
ANSWER Nepal is a non-religious, non-partisan organization dedicated to helping the people of Nepal address problems of poverty through education, primarily by providing educational sponsorships for low-caste and impoverished students. Several Plymouth members travel to Nepal and serve on the ANSWER Nepal Board of Directors.
Fair Trade Products
The second Sunday of each month, Plymouth’s Outreach Board offers Fair Trade products from Equal Exchange for purchase. These include coffee, tea, chocolate, Palestinian Virgin Olive Oil, and other products depending on what is in season. All items are sold at cost.
